1. Use the Import Data Wizard

Bloomberg Excel Add-in Help and Training The Bloomberg Excel Add-in, formally known as Bloomberg API (Application Program Interface), is a tool that delivers Bloomberg data directly into an Excel spreadsheet for custom analysis and calculations. The PC or Excel and may result in a brief disconnection from the server. If an admin login was used to install the software, the end-user may have to manually load the add-in in Excel. To do this, in Excel go to File, Options, Manage: COM Add-ins, and tick the Bloomberg DCA box.

The Import Data Wizard makes it easy to import Bloomberg data into a spreadsheet by automatically generating the appropriate functions through an easy step-by-step process.

You can launch the Import Data wizard by, selecting Import Data from the Bloomberg Menu or by clicking on the Import Data icon on Excel toolbar.

Select the type of data you want download, then follow the steps.

2. Use Worksheet Functions in Excel

Bloomberg’s worksheet functions provide intermediate to advanced Excel users flexibility to construct their own formulas to customize the way Bloomberg data is delivered and organized in the spreadsheet.

In the Excel Add-in, Bloomberg functions are consolidated with flexible optional parameters:

  • BDP (Bloomberg Data Point) is for current data.
  • BDH (Bloomberg Data History) is for historical end of day and historical intraday data.
  • BDS (Bloomberg Data Set) is for large data sets/ bulk data.

When using any of the formulas, you must specify the security for which you want to retrieve data (Security), and you must specify the data item you want to retreieve (Field). The Security must be represented as (Ticker) (Market Sector), for example TGT Equity.

Fields are represented by mnemonics. Use the Field Search tool in Excel to search by category or keyword.

Bloomberg Add In Excel 2016 Download

Data extracted through the Excel API is subject to monthly download limits. Please be judicious in downloading data to avoid hitting the limits for yourself and all other users. Once the monthly limit is reached at a terminal, data cannot be downloaded until the start of the next month.​
If the monthly limit has been reached on a terminal:

  1. Report it to Bloomberg: Hit the Bloomberg Help key (F1) twice. Via a chat with the Helpdesk ask them to boost the limit. Bloomberg will ask for the details of the research that caused the overage.
  2. If you are not sure or do not know what caused the limit issue - please report to it to the Content Development Team, jlcd@librarynetwork.org.​ ​​

  • Use the Bloomberg datafeed in EDI instead: https://edi.imf.org/#/.
  • Contact Bloomberg to confirm your data retrieval strategy (<HELP> <Help>to start instant messaging). The Bloomberg terminal already includes many helpful aggregates and analyses; raw data might not need to be downloaded.
  • Check with the Library (jlcd@librarynetwork.org); they can offer alternatives and/or discuss with Bloomberg on your behalf.
